EN: The village fountain of Simplon stands in the middle of the redesigned village square. It has two basins of granite. The larger one is octagonal, the smaller one on the opposite side of the fountain column is square and tapers towards the bottom.
The fountain dates from the 1870s and was used primarily for watering the carriage horses, that crossed the Simplon Pass in large numbers before the construction of the railway tunnel.
DE: Der Dorfbrunnen von Simplon steht in der Mitte des neu gestalteten Dorfplatzes. Er hat zwei Becken aus Granit. Das Grössere ist achteckig, das Kleinere auf der gegenüber liegenden Seite der Brunnensäule ist viereckig und verjüngt sich gegen den Boden.
Der Brunnen stammt aus 1870er Jahren und diente vor allem zum Tränken der Kutschenpferde, die vor dem Bau des Eisenbahntunnels noch in grosser Zahl den Simplonpass überquerten.
