This iron bar shot is perfectly engineered for its purpose: Destroying the complex network of lines that make up the rigging of sailing ships, rendering them vulnerable.
A piece of this horrific looking shot is on display in the nelson Gallery of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
An interpretive sign reads as follows:
"Bar shot
about 1805
iron
This shot was fired at the VICTORY at the Battle of Trafalgar. It killed eight Royal Marines. Bar shot was designed to spin through the air, cutting through the rigging of an enemy warship."
