This lion ship's figurehead dates from around 1720 and is on display near the top floor exit on the eastern side of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

A plaque nearby gives the history:

"Lion figurehead
about 1720
painted wood

Craftsmen in the dockyards carved individual figurehead for the Navy's large warships. Smaller warships often had lion figureheads, which were gilded are painted yellow. This is a very rare surviving example."
