There were multiple sequential land wars in New Zealand, all fought over British Crown and Colonists appropriating Maori tribal lands. Despite the the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, which should have protected Maori tribal lands and fishing areas, colonist pressure on the Colonial Government gradually eroded the Government's respect for the treaty, and colonists settled on lands that should have been Maori possessions.
This of course led to multiple conflicts over a period of 30 years, known collectively as the New Zealand Wars.
The memorial obelisk near the Thames and the Old Royal Naval College commemorates the men of the Royal Navy who died in conflicts in New Zealand in the years 1863-1864. These men served on several ships, and were killed in different engagements.
