Kresge's was the forerunner of today's KMart discount store chain and began to expand from its base in Detriot in the 1920s. The first Kresge Store at 116-120 Main Street enlarged its selection of goods by 1926 (City Directory), but further expansion was heralded by the opening of the Kresge Building at 122-136 Main Street.
