At 6:10 am on August 28, 2012, Andrew Gast was rear-ended by a car at 620 Wilmer Avenue near Lunken Airport. Although wearing a helmet, he sustained head injuries and died at the hospital a short time later.

The Cincinnati Cycle Club organized a memorial ride for Andrew on the day of the crash. A group of 50 cyclists rode to the site where they said a few words and had a moment of silence. The group then rode downtown to Over-the-Rhine by Andrew’s home to symbolically finish his ride.
The Cincinnati Cycle Club hosted the Ghost Bike Cermony and ride on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. The ride left from Lunken Airport and passed through Over the Rhine for a stop at Andrew's house for a moment of silence. Upon return to the crash site, the Ghost Bike was presented and placed in Andrew's honor.
