This terrace of seven houses is located on the north side of Lancaster Street, opposite Sun Street, in Lewes. The houses were built on the site of "The Fosse" that was part of a Roman camp.

The full inscription on the stone plaque, that is set into the south face of the middle house, reads:

"The Fosse"

These houses are erected in
The Fosse or Ditch of the
Roman camp which formerly
occupied the site of the
adjoining churchyard.

The churchyard lies to the north of the houses.

A fosse generally refers to a moat or defensive ditch in a fortification, usually filled with water.
