Antietam National Battlefield consists of 2,743 acres and the Civil War Trust has preserved an additional 240 acres around the battlefield site. Antietam was one of the first five Civil War battlefields to be preserved by the Federal Government on August 30, 1890. Between 1896 and 1898 the U.S. War Department placed over 300 tablets to mark the location of individual regiments during important aspects of the Battle of Antietam which occurred on September 17, 1862. Since 1933 Department of the Interior has maintained the battlefield.
Bloody Lane was the site of heavy fighting. Tablet No. 40 describes the position and actions of French's Division, Second Army Corps. It is located near the monument for the 5th Maryland (US) Infantry and is inscribed:
U.S.A.
FRENCH'S DIVISION, SECOND ARMY CORPS
Brig. Gen. William H. French, Commanding.
September 17, 1862
French's Division crossed the Antietam at Pry's Ford about 8:30
A.M., and marched in columns by Brigades, Kimball on the right, Morris
in the center, and Weber on the left. After advancing about one
mile the Division faced to the left, passed through meadows to
Roulette's House, near which it encountered the enemy and pushed
them back to the Bloody Lane, where its advance was checked by a
portion of D.H. Hill's Division.
A desperate contest ensued, lasting until 1 o'clock, when, sup-
ported by Richardson's Division on the left, a charge was made
and the enemy forced to retire to Piper's Lane and the fields beyond.
French's Division bivouacked beyond the ridge north of this point.
No. 40.
