A plaque which is part of an historical walk states the church was built by local stone mason John Purvis. The Reverend James Gurney was the first minister appointed in 1858. In 1871 there were 154 parishioners in a town with a population of 234. The early families paid a fee for their pew until 1913.

It continues as a church offering a Sunday service at 09:30 am.
