[FR]Le canal du Loing longe la rivière du même nom. Il permet de relier la Seine à St Mammès aux canaux de Briare et d'Orléans à Montargis dans le Loiret. Le canal mesure un peu plus de 49km et est composé de 19 écluses en fonctionnement.

Au début de XVIIIe siècle, le duc d'Orléans demande la réalisation d'un canal le long du Loing. Il permettrait de relier Montargis à la Seine afin d'alimenter Paris d'une manière plus sécurisé car le Loing est dangeraux au niveau navigation. Louis XV donne son accord au duc d'Orléans en 1719. Les travaux sur le canal débutent en 1720.
En 1809, la Compagnie des canaux d'Orléans et du Loing est fondée pour gérer les deux canaux. L'État, qui est devenu propriétaire des canaux en 1861, réalise à la fin du XIXe siècle des travaux d'élargissement pour mettre les écluses au gabarit Freycinet apparu en 1879 : celui-ci permet la circulation de péniches de 39 m de long sur 5,20 m de large pour 2 mètres de tirant d'eau alors que le canal n'accepte jusque-là que des péniches de 30,40 m sur 5,20 m et 1,60 mètre de tirant d'eau.

[EN] The Loing canal along the river of the same name. It connects the Seine at St Mammès canals of Briare and Orleans to Montargis in the Loiret. The channel measuring just over 49km and has 19 locks in operation.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the Duke of Orleans asked the realization of a long-Loing channel. It would link the Seine Montargis to Paris to feed a more secure manner because the Loing is dangerous cargo in navigation. Louis XV agrees to the Duke of Orleans in 1719. Work on the canal began in 1720.
In 1809, the channel Orleans Company and Loing is founded to manage both channels.
