An information kiosk at the location gives the following information:

Here in Moura we have a unique way of marking our position along the meridian in relation to the rest of the world. The "holey" rocks that you see here mark the 150° Meridian as it crosses the Dawson Highway. As you line up the holes in these sentinel rocks, you are sighting up the path of this meridian. This is the mid-point of the Eastern Standard Time Zone where the Sun rises exactly at 6:00 am, and sets at 06:00 pm twice a year, at the equinox (equal day and night) 22 March and 22 September.

The sentinel rocks are two large sandstone boulders with drill holes through them. Anglo Coal drills the overlaying sandstone of its open cut mines to accommodate high explosives which when charged reduce the sandstone to a manageable size. Sometimes the sandstone remains intact & that is what has been incorporated here.

You actually stand on the 150° meridian & look along it through the holes, aligning one hole with the other.
