The lighthous' first light source consisted of some oillamps with brass plates behind which reflected the light. The light house taxes were increased at the same time, but the sailors refused to pay the taxes. As a result the light was turned off. 28 years passed before it was turned on again after a major restoration. In 1842 the lighthouse got a Fresnel lens as the first lighthouse in Denmark. The lens was replaced with a rotating lens in 1878 with red and white light. In 1925 the lighthouse got an electrical lamp.
