Noted Quaker William Penn left England in 1681 after King Charles II paid a debt owed Penn's father with a huge land grant in the American Colonies, which today comprises the US states of Pennsylvania and Delaware.
In 1911, the Pennsylvania Society of New York erected this plaque in All hallows Church to celebrate and commemorate Penn's baptism here in 1644.
The plaque was damaged when All Hallows was destroyed by German bombing during the blitz, however, the remnants of the plaque have been restored to their place, and the missing words filled in by carving them in stone.
The plaque reads as follows:
"In memory of WILLIAM PENN
Baptized in this church October 23rd AD 1644
Proprietary founder and Governor of
PENNSYLVANIA
Exemplar of Brotherhood and Peace
Giver ** Lover of mankind
I shall not usurp the right of any or oppress
His person. God has furnished me with a better
Resolution and has given me His grace to keep it.
This tablet is erected by
The Pennsylvania Society of New York AD 1911"
