Born in 1330 in Bohemia, Johannes von Nepomuk studied theology, law and philosophy. In 1389 he became a general curate in the archbishopric Prague. In the quarrel between Bohemian's king Wenzel IV with the diocese he was pushed on the 20th of March, 1393 after torture in the presence Wenzels by the Prague Karl's bridge in Moldavia. In 1729 the patron saint of the skippers, fishermen and bridges was canonised.
The statue was made around 1800 by an unknown artist and war found in the river Rhine in 1862. It is owned by the "Schifferverein-Beuel 1862 e.V." (Skipper's association Beuel) who put it up on its location. The statue was restored in 2009.
