Pierre Du Gua de Monts born in Royan, France, circa 1558. As Champlain, he fought the Catholic League from 1582 to 1594 in the army of Henry of Navarre, the future King Henri IV of France.
Mons Dugua touch a pension from the king, allowing him to embark with the crew of Pierre Chauvin Tonnetuit in 1600 and attend the founding of Tadoussac. Therefore, it is more interested in the fur trade and the colonization of New France. From 1600 to 1603 he had traveled to Canada, becoming familiar with the territory. In 1603, he obtained the trading monopoly for Acadia and became Lieutenant General of New France, the first representative of the King in North America.
Later in 1608, the king grants Gua de Monts treats a one-year monopoly on the banks of the St. Lawrence River after having removed the one he held in Acadia because of French merchants pressures. In return, Mons Dugua agrees to establish there a new home, mandate he entrusted to his lieutenant, Samuel de Champlain.
Long, Quebec historians, for most Catholics (many religious), ignore or underestimate the Dugua de Mons contribution to the founding of the colony. Among other reasons: it is the "contrary religion" or "called reformed" or Protestantism. But it was he who acts as Lieutenant General of New France from 1603 to 1612, which lays the foundation of Port Royal (capital of Acadian New France) and finance the founding of Quebec during the period 1608- 1613.
Each action performed by Champlain in Acadia (1604-1607) and Canada (1608-1612) during these years there is therefore made possible through the financial support of Dugua de Mons: exploration, diplomacy with the Indians, wars participation indigenous in 1609 and in 1610, discovery of Lake Champlain, Quebec foundation, etc. New France would not have been the same without Pierre Du Gua de Monts. The man and his essential action worth recognition.

Pierre Dugua de Mons naît à Royan, en France, vers 1558. Comme Champlain, il combat la Ligue catholique de 1582 à 1594 dans l’armée d’Henri de Navarre, futur roi Henri IV de France.
Dugua de Mons touche une pension du roi, ce qui lui permet de s’embarquer avec l’équipage de Pierre Chauvin de Tonnetuit en 1600 et d’assister à la fondation de Tadoussac. Dès lors, il s’intéresse davantage à la traite des fourrures et à la colonisation de la Nouvelle-France. De 1600 à 1603, il aurait voyagé en Acadie, se familiarisant avec le territoire. En 1603, il obtient le monopole de la traite pour l’Acadie et devient lieutenant-général de la Nouvelle-France, premier représentant du roi en Amérique du Nord.
Plus tard en 1608, le roi concède à Dugua de Mons un monopole de traite d’un an sur les rives du fleuve Saint-Laurent après lui avoir retiré celui qu’il détenait en Acadie en raison des pressions de marchands français. En contrepartie, Dugua de Mons s’engage à y fonder une nouvelle habitation, mandat qu’il confie à son lieutenant, Samuel de Champlain.
Longtemps, les historiens du Québec, pour la plupart catholiques (dont plusieurs religieux), ignoreront ou sous-estimeront la contribution de Dugua de Mons à la fondation de la colonie. Entre autres raisons : il est de la « religion contraire » ou « prétendue réformée », soit le protestantisme. C’est pourtant lui qui agit comme lieutenant-général de la Nouvelle-France de 1603 à 1612, qui jette les fondements de Port-Royal (capitale de la Nouvelle-France acadienne) et qui finance la fondation de Québec pendant la période 1608-1613.
Chaque action accomplie par Champlain en Acadie (1604-1607) et au Canada (1608-1612) pendant ces années-là est donc rendue possible grâce à l’apport financier de Dugua de Mons : explorations, diplomatie avec les Amérindiens, participation aux guerres autochtones en 1609 et en 1610, découverte du lac Champlain, fondation de Québec, etc. La Nouvelle-France n’aurait pas été la même sans Pierre Dugua de Mons. L’homme et son action essentielle valent d’être reconnus.
