Along Rangely Road on the east side of the U Maine campus, the police station is right at the main entrance to the centre of the campus. Their facility consists of a reasonably large brick and wood sided bungalow style building set behind parking lots and an open grassed area.
On the grounds in front of the station is a bronze plaque placed in honour of University of Maine public safety members, past, present and future, and remembering U Maine police officer Robert E. Sutton, who died in the line of duty September 20, 1963. He was a member of the U Maine Police Department.
The University of Maine Police Department is a full-service police department staffed by state-certified police officers and support personnel 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year. The training and professional standards met by UMaine’s officers are the same as those required in any municipality across the state.
Because of the unique nature of a university community and the activities that take place in it, UMaine officers are “specialists.” They are practitioners of a kind of police work that makes them a vital and positive force in the community that they protect and serve.
Employing the principles of community policing, our officers are empowered to work in partnership with the community to prevent crime and solve problems that affect students, visitors, faculty and staff. The community’s well-being, providing service and assistance whenever possible and supporting the academic environment are factors in our day-to-day operations.
