Hendley's Row is known for its contribution to Galvestons Maritime Commerce, but it also served as the home of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston.

The Hendley Building
Built 1855-1859. First commercial building in Galveston. As the first headquarters of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston Engineering Office, established February 25, 1880. From these offices, the first district engineer, Major Samuel M. Mansfield, directed the earliest river and harbor improvements along the Texas Gulf Coast. Offices in the Henley building were occupied by the Army Engineers until 1888.
