In December, 1944 a B-24 Liberator bomber enroute from St. Paul, MN to Mitchell Field in New York lost visibility in a snow squall, and crashed into Pepin Lake, which is a backwater of the Missisippi River. Reports conflict on the actual crash site within the lake, but locals describe a spot west of the town pier, and about 3/4 mile offshore. The pilot and both crewmembers were killed. I learned about this incident when I discovered a fragment of the plane displayed in the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum at 306 3rd St in Pepin. WM Coordinates are for the nearest publicly accessible point of land, the Pepin town pier.
