Joshua Tetley was born on the 20th July 1778 in Birkinshaw, Yorkshire to a family of maltsters. The Tetley maltster business, begun by Joshua’s grandfather William, became bankrupt in 1801. Joshua’s father moved into the insurance business.
Joshua married Hannah Carbutt in 1808. Hannah’s family were affluent which allowed Joshua, in 1822, to lease William Sykes Brewery in Hunslet. Joshua took on a highly skilled workforce and soon became the second largest brewery in Leeds. The Beer House Act of 1830 allowed Tetley to acquire ale houses and expand the business.
In later life Joshua and his wife Hannah retired to Hollins Hall, Killinghall (then known as The Hollings). In 1857 Hannah died and on 26th August 1859 Joshua died. The couple are buried in Hampsthwaite.
The grave inscription on the front of the gravestone is barely legible, however an engraved slab has been placed to the rear of the original gravestone carrying a new inscription.
