The Kansas underground salt museum known as Strataca displays this 6,000 pound block of pure salt in the display area, as you begin the tour at the 650 foot underground level. The display includes an educational sign describing facts about salt, salt mining and this block.

Millions of tons of salt have been mined here, but this block, mined in 2004 was preserved for display because of it's rare level of purity.

The salt deposit covers over 20,000 square miles, in Kansas and Oklahoma, and formed 275 million years ago with the slow evaporation of a Permian-Era sea.

As this block, if not preserved would likely have ended up as road salt on Chicago streets, its commercial value would be less than $300.00!
Type of Display: Geological
