Moonville was formed around 1872 when the B&O Railroad come through the area. It was mostly a mining town, the main mine being at the intersection of the current township road, and the railroad crossings. Two spurs fed off the main-line.
Little remains of Moonville. It is said that some pottery shards can be found in Raccoon Creek. The foundations of the Train Station and Store can still be seen, though little is left - just a few broken glass jars.
