William Powell Frith was born in Aldfield on 19th January 1819. His father encouraged the young William to study art. Frith moved to London in 1835 where he studied art at Sass’s Academy, and later at the Royal Academy. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1853. He specialised in paintings of social subjects and observations of Victorian society and class system. He retired from the Royal Academy in 1890 and died in 1909.

The plaque, placed in 2007 reads
William Powell Frith RA
Artist 1819 – 1909

Son of the House Steward to Mrs Lawrence of Studley Royal, Frith was born in Aldfield on the 9th January 1819 and lived here from 1819 until 1826, when the family left to manage the Dragon Hotel, Harrogate.

Frith left for London in 1835 “to make my fortune”.
