"Im Blickpunkt der Strackgasse steht die Hospitalkirche. Der heutige, zweite Kirchbau wurde am 4. Mai grundgelegt. Oberurseler Handwerker errichteten das Gebäude nach einem Entwurf des Maurermeisters Johannes Strasser und am 1. Juli 1728 wurde die Kirche vom Mainzer Weihbischof Adolf Schnernauer geweiht. Die "Bärbel" sagten früher die Oberurseler, denn St. Barbara ist die Patronin der kleinen Kirche St. Rochus steht der heiligen Frau zur Seite; er ist der Patron der Hospitäler und die kleine Hauskirche des Hospitals wurde mit dessen Mitteln gebaut.
Im Innern verlangt der Hochaltar Aufmerksamkeit. Er beschäftigte einmal neben dem Schreiner Erlenbusch drei namhafte Bildhauer. Dem Mainzer Martin Biterich werden die Kreuzigung, darüber Gottvater und St. Barbara und die zwei sitzenden Putten zugeschrieben. Die beigestellten Engel brachte der Frankfurter Andreas Donett. Ein anderer Frankfurter, Johann Bernhard Schwarzenberger, schuf den Hl. Rochus, seine Pestwunde zeigend und den Hl. Josef. Er ist der Fürsprecher bei Gott um eine gute Sterbestunde, ein sicher gefragter Heiliger bei den früheren Bewohnern des Hospitals. Die kleine Orgel auf der Empore stiftete der Deutsche Gewerkschaftsbund aus der ehemaligen Villa Gans an der Königsteiner Straße.
Das Deckengemälde von Georg Hieronymi mit der Hl. Barbara lässt die Herrlichkeit des Himmels erahnen. So sieht es auch die Italienische Katholische Gemeinde, wenn sie von der 1677 von Christoph Roth in Mainz gegossenen Glocke gerufen wird, zur "nostra Chiesa italiana". Der Kirchweihtag wurde auf den Sonntag nach Maria Heimsuchung gelegt."
