The museum was formally created after the Second World War, in 1945, but by then the exhibit was hosted by the National Library.
In 1963 the building of the museum was inaugurated, designed by Boris Magaš, Edo Šmidihen and Radovan Horvat.
Along the years the museum gathered about 300.000 items, which miraculously survived the war of the late 20th Century.
Although the subject is the national history, there is a clear focus in the events of the late 90's, namely the siege of Sarajevo.
