Den 5,6 Kilometer langen Niddataler Planetenweg gibt es seit 2011. Gezeigt werden die Sonne und alle Planeten bis hin zum (Zwergplaneten) Pluto (ehemals ein Planet).
Der Planetenweg zeigt das Sonnensystem im Maßstab 1:1.000.000.000. Die Entfernung der Planeten untereinander entspricht nicht der Luftlinie, sondern wurde entlang des Radweges gemessen. So wird die Größe des Sonnensystems besser erfahrbar bzw. erradelbar. Der nächstgelegene Fixstern, Proxima Centauri, ist 4,2 Lichtjahre entfernt. Bei diesem Maßstab wären das ca. 4.000 Kilometer. Ein Modell des Sternes ist also nicht aufgestellt worden.
Auch die Größe der Planeten wird maßstabsgerecht verdeutlicht. Am Standort der Planeten sind Stelen aus Cortenstahlplatten aufgestellt (Cortenstahl ist ein wetterfester Baustahl). In diesen Stahlplatten sind Löcher, deren Größe der Größe des jeweiligen Himmelskörpers entspricht. Entsprechend ist das Bohrloch der Sonne nicht zu übersehen während es bei den kleineren Planeten so klein ist, dass es kaum noch zu sehen ist.
Oberhalb der Bohrungen ist das jeweilige astronomische Symbol angebracht. Am unteren Ende der Stele finden sich Informationstafeln mit Erläuterungen über das Himmelsobjekt.

This planet path represents the solar system at a scale of 1:1,000,000,000. The distance between the planet is not measure at air-line, but along the cycle path along the river Nidda. So get a better experience of the size of our solar system. The next fixed star, Proxima Centauri, is 4.2 light years away from us. This would be about 4,000 kilometer at the scale used here. Thus, this star is not included at this path.
Also the size of the planets is at the scale of 1:1,000,000,000. At the places of the planets you will find a stele made of steel. A hole was drilled into the steel plate at the size of the planet. The hole for the sun is big, and very small for a small planet. So you also get a feeling of the size.
Above the hole for the planet is the astronomical symbol of the planet. You will also find an information board at the stele.
