The Missouri River bridge at Chamberlain, SD is the only surviving member of a 5-bridge group recognized for their pivotal role in opening the west to transportation and commerce. The bridges were completed using a design by engineer John Edward Kirkham, which reduced the overall construction costs dramatically. Widening of the river and flood control projects doomed 4 bridges to obsolescence. The last remaining bridge carries a portion of Interstate 90. The Chamberlain, SD visitor center on I-90 displays the commemorative plaques both inside and outside the building, and affords a nice overlook towards the bridge.
