Ses habitants sont appelés les Melunais(es) (plus rarement Melunois ou Melodunois).

Saint Pérotin et saint Aspais prêchent l'Évangile à Melun dès le IIIe siècle. Son nom moderne date du VIe siècle

Le blason de la ville fait référence à l'époque médiévale puisque le roi de France Robert II meurt à Melun en 1031.

L'hotel de ville:
Construction en pierre et brique. Le site était occupé par l’hôtel des Cens, habité par les bénédictines de Trainel de 1629 à 1652. L'ancien bâtiment fut rasé sauf la tourelle de l'Hôtel des Cens qui conduit actuellement aux bureaux. La tourelle de gauche est édifiée en 1847-1848.En entrant dans le bâtiment à droite, vous accédez aux services de la mairie: papiers d'identité...
Sur la façade du bâtiment, à gauche il y a un porche depuis lequel vous pouvez accéder à un petit parc.
Sur la place, devant la mairie, vous pouvez observer une statue à la mémoire de Jacques Amiot, évêque né à Melun en 1513.
