Ownby Cemetery is located in the Big Greenbrier Cove area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. According to the book, "History Hikes of the Smokies" there are 23 graves in the cemetery. Many of the headstones display death dates in the 1908 - 1910 range. Many graves are marked with plain rounded rocks.

The cemetery lies on a ridge in keeping with mountain practice of placing cemeteries on land of no use for farming. A set of concrete steps leads to the cemetery from the trail. The day we were there the artificial flowers were still colorful from the last "decoration day."

The Park Service opens the gate at the beginning of the trail to allow relatives to drive to the cemetery for "decoration."
