A true testament to the artist's spirit that burns inside the Opera House's co-founder Marta Beckett.
Marta was a professionaly trained classical dancer who moved to Death Valley Junction in the 1960's. Faced with the loss of culture in such a barren area, she took an old social hall from the town's borax-mining days and transformed it into a live theatre venue. Tired of dancing for herself and empty seats, she painted the walls with people, she she'd always have an audience. Over time locals, then visitors passing through to or from Death Valley began to come to her performances.
Now 90 years old, Marta still lives in the hotel. Although not quite as spry as she was in her youth, she still attends performances.
The Opera House has a dancer on staff, and still conducts performances for locals and visitors alike. Regular performances are $20/person. Weekend request performances are $25/person. Tours are conducted on an as-requested basis during the day, for a $5/person "donation" to the building fund.
