The sign says:

Early Texas Trails

Before the American Civil War, several trails crossed at 15-mile square area. Identified as choice land by the Peters Colony, modern Irving's 68 square-miles lie entirely within this tract, which Henry O. Hedgcoxe surveyed. Game, Indians, and settlers traversed these trails that were often little more than a collection of landmarks or ways of least resistance.

The California Trail favored by 49ers crossed the Elm Fork of the Trinity River near modern Las Colinas and continued southwest to a community later called Sowers where it met the Birdville Trail going west.

To the north, Bird's Fort Trail, established in 1841, followed in proximity the route of modern Valley View Lane. Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, traveled this trail to Bird's Fort via Grapevine Springs to negotiate with the Indians. "A treaty of friendship ... was signed at Bird's Fort ... 29th day of Septr/1843".

To the south, the Eagle Ford trail connected early settlements south of the Trinity's West Fork to communities farther west. The crossing at Eagle Ford was for decades the major entry to and exit from the pre-Irving communities between the forks.

Timbers, prairie and waterways named on the Peters Colony map of 1849 are applied to the base map of this exhibit. Now the history of the site continues with the modern commuter at the South Irving Transit Center.
