The waymark coordinates are for the gated-entry to the vault built through the Bloody Tower, which allows passage into the Inner Yard of the tower of London. The portcullis is a heavy iron gate, raised and lowered by a pulley. Grooves worn into the walls of the bloody tower to accommodate the movement of the portcullis are easily seen today on tour.
The historic marker nearby reads as follows:
"THE PORTCULLIS
The portcullis was lowered and raised by a pulley, which controls the winding mechanism. Originally medieval, the portcullis was probably renewed in the early 16th century.
The Oakwood partition opposite may be a survivor of the 17th century work to make the Bloody Tower comfortable for Sir Walter Raleigh and his family."
