A colourful sign inside the tower of London at the Polar Bear menagerie explains the history of th King Henry's "white bear," better known in our time as a Polar Bear.
The historical sign reads as follows:
"A Gift to King Henry III of England
A POLAR BEAR
From King Haakon IV of Norway
1252
By order of King Henry III, 30 October 1252:
Let the Keeper of the Kings White Bear, which was lately sent to him from Norway, and is now at the Tower of London, have a muzzle and an iron chain . . . And a long and strong cord to hold it, when fishing in the Thames."
