Nusrat Jahan had only been studying at Willis College in downtown Ottawa for less than two weeks, yet she still left her mark on her classmates who are now in shock after Thursday’s fatal cyclist collision.
The 23-year-old was struck by a truck while travelling eastbound at the busy intersection of Laurier Avenue and Lyon Street during morning rush hour.
Jahan, whose father is an administration officer at the Bangladesh High Commission, had just started an executive business administration program at Willis College on O’Connor Street, just blocks away from the collision.
Her instructor, Mark Grober, cancelled classes on Friday and students from her tight-knit classroom gathered to pay their respects at a growing makeshift memorial downtown.
“Twenty-three years old. That’s too young,” said Grober, who described Jahan as a “model student” in a phone interview.
“She had this happy, positive aura about her. She was always willing to participate in class and smile and laugh. And just pleasant coming in, coming out.”
Jahan would make friends easily and quickly, he added.
The college’s president and CEO, Rima Aristocrat, was still rattled by the tragedy and became emotional talking about Jahan.
“Being a mother myself it’s very difficult for me. No mother should bury a child. We give our condolences,” she said. “Even in a short period of time she made an impact on our lives.”
