This is the second Napoleon on display in front of the Visitor Center.
Developed in the 1850's and named in honour of Napoleon III of France, the Model 1857 was the favoured field piece by both Armies. When it was first introduced, it quickly phased out Model 1841 6 and 12 pounders.
Incredibly sturdy, the gun was capable of both solid shot and close-in cannister shot, with deadly results at each.
The gun on display was cast by the Revere Copper Company foundry of Boston, MA in 1862. It bears serial number 74, and foundry number 79 and has a weight 1,210 lbs. It was inspected by Thomas J. Rodman, as evidenced by the initials T.J.R.
