By far the coolest AZ Mark find of all I've recovered thus far. I searched around the area based off the datasheet for 10 minutes and then realized the fence line was not the original fence line from the datasheet. The original fence line must have been wooden posts propped up by lava rock. There are numerous piles of lava rock that indicated where the original fence post was located. The newer fence is a metal fence located about 6-8 feet north of the original fence. The cedar tree mentioned in the datasheet is actually a juniper tree and was cut down and lying dead on the ground. I used these two landmarks to narrow down the spot and kicked the ground around where I though it should be. After a couple of minutes, I kicked a chunk of lava rock and some dirt and there it was, all scratched and bent around the edges (probably from logging the junipers out). Uncovering a survey mark monumented at ground level and covered with dirt and rock for years is always fun!

I recovered this U.S. Coast & Geological Survey triangulation station from 1948 in good condition. The NGS datasheet is adequate for station recovery with the exception of the relocated fenceline and the now-dead juniper tree. The posted coordinates should place you pretty close to this mark.

NGS datasheet info:
