It is by combining the efforts of various partners that the Cégep de Trois-Rivières adopts an astronomical observatory in Champlain. Involved in the project: the Cégep de Trois-Rivières, the Cégep Foundation, the Federation des Caisses Populaires Desjardins du Quebec center and the Ministry of Education of Quebec.
The physics department had a 200 mm telescope, a Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain type. This is the first telescope under the dome of the observatory at the inauguration in 1980.
The limited size of the device and the instability of the concrete column supporting the telescope require the department to make changes. A new telescope is purchased. The optics with an aperture of 400 mm, is delivered by the Star Liner company in Tucson, Arizona. The department develops the telescope mechanical components to ensure the stability of the unit. This is the company Sigama of Cap-de-la-Madeleine, which makes the manufacture of the telescope mount. All costs are drawn from the budget of the Department of Physics.
The obsrvatoir is open to the public. From June 25 to August 21, facilitators Chartray-Mathieu Pronovost and William Frost will welcome visitors from 20 pm Wednesday to Sunday inclusive.
It is best to reserve a place by calling 819 295-3043 as the site can only accommodate thirty people per evening. Several themes will be the program this year: presentations on the birth and death of stars and the solar system exploration, followed by observation of the sky with the naked eye and telescope. Obviously the climax will occur on August 12 with the Perseids.
