The obelisk is situated in Darfield All Saints Parish Churchyard, South Yorkshire. On the 19th February 1857 there was a heavy underground explosion at Lundhill Colliery caused by ignited fire damp (methane gas).It was some months later that 185 bodies were recovered, the remaining 4 were not traced.
