"The present church was constructed in c. 1908. Apparently the church also supported a school for boys, though the school has long
been defunct. The school buildings, according to Leeper’s history of Portland, were moved and repurposed as residences. This
building is unique among side steeple churches, and churches in general in rural Callaway County. The building is the only example of
rusticated concrete block construction in the survey sample. The building is also one of the best, and most intact, examples of the side
steeple church in the county." ~ Missouri Department of Natural Resources
