A moulded piscina in the south wall of the chancel. There is also a cusped ogee headed piscina in the north chapel.

The village of Sheldwich was first recorded in the year 784. Its importance came from its position astride the highway between the port of Faversham and the market of Ashford. The road was turnpiked about 1765 and the old toll house window can still be seen beside the A251 road. When St James' was built almost a thousand years ago, it was just a chapel to Faversham church and only became a parish in the 14th century.
