Right on the waterfront of the "Nieuwkoopse Plassen", you will find this set of nails, stacked on top of a pillar.
The photo shows the artwork 'Spijkers' (nails), also called 'Taainagelmonument'. The artists are Gerda Wijmans, P. de Rooy and H. Mulder. The sculpture stands in the center of Nieuwkoop on the spot where the Dorpsstraat (mainstreet) and the Noordenseweg merge.
The artwork reminds of the many forges which were located in Nieuwkoop in the past. Until the 19th century only forged nails existed. After that they started producing nails from wire.
Around 1850 there were more than twenty different types of nails, varying in height, weight and shape.
The metal industry is still present in Nieuwkoop.
