Leola Jean Cook apparently preferred her middle name, since only the initial of her first name is used on her grave marker, followed by her middle name. She was born to John and Inez Cook on 16 February 1906. She never married, but she taught school all over Newton County, Missouri. Her biography says that in 1920 she graduated from Hazel Green, which is probably a school in what is now Boulder City (a ghost town) to the west of Stella, since the cemetery there is known as Hazelgreen (one word). She graduated from the high school in Stella, which is still there, though the town has a population of 125.
After retiring from teaching rural schools, she taught art at Crowder College -- a community college in Neosho. She passed away in a nursing home surprisingly not in Newton County, but in Lawrence County in Aurora, Missouri on 6 March 2008, a month after having turned 102 years old.
