"Die Vilbeler Wasserburg geht auf ein Wildhufener-Gehöft des Reichsforstes Dreieich zurück. Ein in Urkunden 1128 zum ersten Mal erscheinendes Vilbeler Rittergeschlecht betrieb den Ausbau des Ministerialen-Hofes zur Burg. Der Niedergang der zentralen Reichsgewalt während des späten Mittelalters stellte die Lebensgrundlagen der Ritter als im Grunde abhängiger Kriegerstand in Frage. Als Konsequenz kam das Raubrittertum auf, dem auch die Vilbeler Ritter nachgingen. Die um die Sicherheit ihrer Zufahrtswege besorgte Stadt Frankfurt zerstörte die Vilbeler Burg in einer Auseinandersetzung mit Bechtram von Vilbel. Mit Frankfurt im Bündnis waren die Herren von Hanau
als Vilbeler Landesherren sowie die Falkensteiner. Der Letzte aus deren Geschlecht, Werner von Falkenstein, Erzbischof von Trier, folgte den Vilbeler Rittern im Besitz und ließ die zerstörte Burg in den Jahren 1409-1414 wieder aufbauen."

"The Vilbeler Wasserburg goes back to a wild Hufener homestead of Imperial Forest Dreieich.
