Arrivés à Colmar avant 1250, les Franciscains entament en 1292 la construction d’un édifice qui ne sera achevé qu’au cours de la première moitié du XIVe siècle. Avec l’église des Dominicains, ce monument compte parmi les réalisations majeures des ordres mendiants dans notre région. Plusieurs restaurations de 1982 à 1997 permirent à l’église de retrouver son état primitif, en rehaussant notamment les plafonds baissés en 1862 pour des économies de chauffage. L’église Saint-Matthieu à la remarquable acoustique, accueille chaque année des concerts du Festival international de musique de Colmar.

En 1543, le couvent des Franciscains ferma définitivement ses portes et la ville racheta les bâtiments pour y installer l’hôpital. En 1575, l’église fut affectée à la communauté luthérienne de Colmar. En 1715 un mur est édifié pour séparer d’un côté la chapelle protestante dans la nef et de l’autre côté la chapelle catholique dans le chœur, pour l’hôpital installé à proximité. Il faudra attendre 1937 et la construction du nouvel hôpital Pasteur, pour que l’église soit à nouveau intégralement réservée au culte protestant et 1987 pour que le mur soit abattu.

Arrived in Colmar before 1250, the Franciscans begin in 1292 construction of a building that will be completed until the first half of the fourteenth century. With the Dominican church, the monument is one of the major achievements of the mendicant orders in our region. Several restorations of 1982-1997 enabled the church to regain its original state, in particular enhancing lowered ceilings in 1862 for heating costs. The Church of St. Matthew the remarkable acoustics, hosts the annual concert of the International Festival of Colmar music.

In 1543, the Franciscan convent closed its doors and the city bought the building to install the hospital there. In 1575, the church was assigned to the Lutheran community of Colmar. In 1715 a wall was built to separate the Protestant side of a chapel in the nave and across the Catholic chapel in the choir, to the hospital installed nearby. It was not until 1937 and the construction of the new hospital Pasteur, that the church is again fully reserved for Protestant worship and 1987 for the wall to be shot.
