Already founded a wooden church on the site of this church in the 9th century. Around 1200 there was a Romanesque brick church, later rebuilt to the present church in 1427 and put into use. In 1598 the Reformation was introduced in Drenthe. Except for the worship of the church is also used for justice, also known as "etstoel". The etstoel was until 1791 the tallest court in the province of Drenthe.
