"Bon Echo Rock - You are standing in the middle of a fault zone where the earth's crust was ripped apart millions of years ago, but fear not! Movement along this rift ceased, leaving behind this imposing 100 metre shear cliff that rises from the deepest lake in Eastern Ontario.
Bon Echo Rock is more than just a spectacular geological phenomenom. It is home to some of eastern Canada's oldest trees. The twisted stunted Eastern White Cedar clinging tenaciously to the cliff are up to 1000 years old.
To the First Nations, the cliff is regarded as a powerful sacred place. Scores of their ancient and mysterious red ochre painting adorn the rock just above the water line.
The "Old Walt" inscription chiselled into the granite is another cultural legacy. Carved in 1920, it links us with a time when Canada's artistic elite gathered at Bon Echo to both work and play.
The rock's natural and cultural treasures set Bon Echo apart, but as enduring as they seem, they are in fact very fragile. We must all ensure that future generations will have an opportunity to appreciate the marvels of the Bon Echo Rock."
