This sign is located on the backboard of a slanted desk just outside the entrance to the Women's Museum. A sign of history in itself, it is also the introduction to other displays and signs presenting other parallel histories. The desk also has a looseleaf binder with additional historical information.
It reads:
"THE WOMEN OF OLD TOWN
1821 - 1872
INTRODUCTION
Women and their families have lived in this area for over
10,000 years. Originally called Cosoy by the indigenous
peoples what is now Old Town was once a thriving village of
approximately 300 individuals who lived beside the river and
utilized the natural resources as part of their way of life.
By the mid 1800s, a variety of groups lived in or near Old
Town. Indigenous, Californios (Mexican Californians) and
European people lived side-by-side for generations, often
inter-marrying and creating a blending and preserving of
traditions. It was a time of dramatic changes and the success
and the stability of the families and town were shaped by the
women's inherited traditional knowledge and new skills.
This exhibit serves to immerse you in the short, yet complete,
years that make up Old Town, 1821-1872. We invite you to
put yourself in this time and era and picture what your life
might have been like, had you been a woman in Old Town."
