St. Peter's Church in St. George Bermuda has a segregated graveyard for slaves and free blacks. Most all of the gravestones are made of limestone and their inscription are illegible. Some gravetones the inscription on slate inserts. These have survived in good shape. One such gravestone id for Robert Simmons. it is inscribed:

Memorial
of
Robert Simmons
who was unfortunately
Drown'd the 12th of may
-1830-
aged 56 years

He was well Esteemed
by all who knew him
And left a Wife
and 2 Children to lament
his loss
