This hydrant has a rather colorful past, as well as a colorful exterior! When we went to take photos and waypoint the hydrant, the painter saw us and came out to talk to us about it. He was glad we were showing interest in his handiwork and offered to tell us the history.

He had originally received permission several years ago to paint the hydrant from the Auburn Fire Chief - with the proviso that the top piece remain red, to indicate the water pressure of the hydrant. Years passed, and he has been happily painting the hydrant every year or two.

Enter a new Fire Chief, who wanted to standardize the appearance of all the hydrants in Auburn. A call to the mayor's office, and a check on the local ordinances saved the hydrant's unique paint job.

The painter also knows of another hydrant nearby, painted like a United States Flag, that we are in the process of investigating.
