The carving is next to a boundary wall of a small triangular plot of land maintained by a local residents association. It is bounded by the canal and Aldcliffe Road

The land used to be the site of a boat builder, but became derelict and vandalised after he retired in 2004.

The land owned by The Canal and River Trust has been leased to Lancaster Council who have in turn sub-let to the Fairfield Association.

The owl forms a centre piece for this area which is to be used as a small public park.
