Below the Woodmen emblem is the emblem of the Freemasons, but what is notable is "J.W. of Empire Lodge No. 586 A.F. & A.M." Mr. Aven was a Junior Warden of the lodge, which still exists, just up the road from here along TX 6. The Empire community itself was west of here, having vanished many years ago. References to it and another community, "Bear Creek", are not uncommon in the area.
The family name, "Aven", is on the plinth, and below it is the inscription:
E.W. Aven
Born Aug. 18, 1871 - Died Sep. 21, 1912
---
None knew him but to love him
None named him but to praise.
Was the inscription legible?: Yes
